Cholera in South Sudan (Declared Contained)

On 3 November 2015, the Ministry of Health for South Sudan announced that the cholera outbreak that began in May 2015, is now over. The announcement follows a period of 10 days with no new laboratory confirmed cases in the country.

During the outbreak a total of 1,818 cases, including 47 deaths, were reported from Central Equatoria and Jonglei states.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
