Cholera in Iraq (Update)

11 November 2015

The cholera outbreak in Iraq has been worsened by recent heavy rains and flooding in Baghdad and surrounding areas. It is estimated that at least 84 000 displaced persons in Baghdad and Anbar have been affected.

More than 2400 cholera cases have been reported in 15 of Iraq's 18 governorates since the outbreak began. Around 85% of confirmed cases are from the southern and central govern-orates of Baghdad, Babylon, Qadiss-iya and Muthanna.

The flooding also hampered the cholera vaccination campaign which began in October 2015, targeting 250 000 internally displaced refugees staying in 62 formal camps in 13 governorates. Over 90% of vaccine coverage has been attained in 12 governorates. The second dose of vacccine is planned for December.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
