Cholera in the WHO Americas Region

The WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has issued the latest cholera epidemiological update. In summary, three countries remain affected by cholera; Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Haiti is the worst affected country with 98% of the total number of cases reported in the Americas. A total of 30 080 cases have been reported up to the end of November 2015; this follows an upsurge of cases in the first 3 months of the year.

Between the beginning of January to end November 2015, a total of 509 suspected cholera cases including 13 fatalities were registered in Domincan Republic.

The health authorities of Cuba have reported a total of 65 confirmed cholera cases in the country as of 19 November 2015. Prevention and control methods have been strengthened as a result.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for the average traveller, however, a good standard of food and water safety and personal hygiene should be maintained.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera.
