Dengue Fever in Thailand (Update)

Health authorities in Thailand reported the 1st dengue-related fatality in the country this year (2016). According to a Bureau of Epidemiology update, Thailand has reported a total of 6667 cases from 76 provinces, including the one death. Bangkok remains the hardest hit region. This is followed by Samutsakorn, Nakornpathom, Rayong and Phuket. Singburi is the only province not reporting dengue.

In 2015, Thailand reported more than 140 000 dengue cases and 140 deaths.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
