Yellow Fever in Democratic Republic of Congo (Update)

29 March 2016

The Minister of Public Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) gave a press statement on 21 March 2016, to allay fears of a yellow fever outbreak in the country.

Twenty suspected cases of yellow fever reported in Kongo Central province are considered to be imported by travellers returning from Angola where a large outbreak is ongoing. Of the samples taken from suspected cases, 7 were laboratory-confirmed as yellow fever virus in Dakar, Senegal. An outbreak has not been declared as these confirmed cases have been imported. The confirmed cases are located in Kimpese (one), Sona Mpangu (3), Matadi (2), and one on the outskirts of Matadi. No indigenous cases of yellow fever were reported in Kongo Central province.

Monitoring has been reinforced at the borders in DRC. Preventive measures have been strengthened in the provinces of Kongo Central, Kwango, Kasai, and Lualaba.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of yellow fever in DRC and vaccination is advised for travellers (unless contraindicated). A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travellers over 1 year of age.

Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
