Cholera in Tanzania

An outbreak of cholera has been reported in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. It has been 8 years since this area of the country reported cholera and thus far, 23 cases have been confirmed. The outbreak is occurring in Ruvu Village and all cases are being treated at a cholera treatment centre set up at Ruvu Muungano Dispensary.

The source of infection is thought to be water from the Pangani river.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
