Cholera in Kenya

31 March 2016

Two new cholera outbreaks have been reported in Kenya by the media. In the Sarif area of Wajir county, 18 cases of cholera are receiving treatment in hospital and a further 4 cases have died as a result of cholera. Since the first outbreak of cholera in Wajir country in August 2015, a total of 2904 cases and 45 deaths have been reported.

The second outbreak is occurring in the Kihoto estate of Naivasha town in Nakuru county, northwest of Nairobi. Well water is being chlorinated, however, the situation is considered critical.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
