Cholera in Dominican Republic

The media has reported on an outbreak of cholera in Santiago province, northern Domincan Republic. A total of 64 suspected cases have been identified and of those, 4 have been confirmed as cholera. Those affected were located in the district of La Canela and the sectors of Gurabo and Cienfuegos in Santiago province.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
