Measles in South Sudan

19 April 2016

The media has reported 350 clinically confirmed cases of measles in South Sudan in the last 12 weeks and a further 21 suspected cases have been reported in Bentiu in the last fortnight.

A measles outbreak response is reportedly ongoing in Bentiu town and Rubkona targeting 29,000 children for vaccination and a national measles follow-up campaign is planned to be implemented in October.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-13 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
