In Australia, dengue fever outbreaks occur annually in north Queensland state. Cases have recently been reported from 4 areas of the state. In February 2016, one local case was confirmed in Townsville. The three outbreaks reported during March 2016, were located in Cairns (2 confirmed local cases); Charters Towers (5 confirmed, 4 probable local cases) and Torres (19 confirmed local cases).
Over the past 10 years large outbreaks have occurred in the Torres Strait, Cairns, Mossman, Innisfail, Tully, Townsville and Charters Towers.

Cairns is a popular destination for UK travellers; they should be made aware of the risk of dengue fever and advised on bite avoidance measures.
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
