Enterovirus Outbreak in Spain (Catalonia)

26 May 2016

The Catalonia Department of Health has confirmed an outbreak of enterovirus with a total of 60 cases having been detected in minors in recent weeks, 29 of which have been hospitalised after suffering a form of encephalitis. Most of the affected children and recovering well, however, 4 remain in intensive care.

Enterovirus infections are primarily transmitted by faecal-oral and respiratory routes; spread from person to person when an infected individual coughs and/or sneezes, or touches and contaminates surfaces.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should reduce risk of enterovirus infection by strengthening basic hygiene measures:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after changing nappies.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are unwell.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and door handles, especially if someone is unwell.
