Measles in Australia

04 July 2016

On 1 July 2016 Victoria’s acting Chief Health Officer Dr Romanes issued a measles alert to General Practitioners and Hospital Emergency Departments.

This alert was issued in response to a confirmed measles case in a young female who was infectious whilst travelling in Victoria. The case has not travelled internationally and the measles infection appears to be locally acquired. The case was in Geelong, Hampton East and the Melbourne central business district during the time they probably acquired their infection.

Additionally, on the 2 July 2016 the media reported a further two measles cases in Victoria. There is currently no direct link between all three measles cases, however, Dr Romanes suggested there is now a potential spread of the infection in Geelong, the Surf Coast and the west and northwest suburbs of Melbourne, and the inner city.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection
