Avian Influenza (Human H7N9) (Update)

The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China have notified WHO of 7 new laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection, including 4 deaths.

Onset dates range from 26 May to 23 June 2016. Cases range in age from 52 to 68 years. Of these 7 cases, 4 are male. The majority (5 cases) reported exposure to live poultry, slaughtered poultry or live poultry markets. One case has no known history of exposure to poultry and the remaining case works in a arket where live poultry is sold. There was no report of human to human tranmission.

Cases were reported from 6 provinces and municipalities: Tianjin (2), Anhui (1), Beijing (1), Jiangsu (1), Liaoning (1) and Zhejiang (1).

Advice for Travellers

Travellers experiencing severe flu like symptoms within 10 days of returning from China, should contact their GP and inform them of their recent travel to China.
