Anthrax (Human) (Reindeer) in Western Siberia

28 July 2016

A media report of 27 July 2016 asserts that a large natural anthrax outbreak on the tundra in Yamalo-Nenets has left 13 people hospitalised and 1200 reindeer dead. The 13 people are isolated in the infectious disease department at a hospital in Salekhard.

The outbreak zone is around the Tarko-Sale tribe by the Pur River, south of Urengoy, approximately 335 miles southeast of Salekhard, the capital of Yamalo-Nenets AO. The Governor of Yamalo-Nenets AO in Western Siberia has ordered urgent action to vaccinate nomads around the risk zone. Mass evacuation of the reindeer herders, including children, has started from the exposed areas. In addition, mass vaccination of reindeer has been undertaken.

Advice for Travellers

The risk to travellers is low, most cases are of the cutaneous form and related to close contact with infected animals in rural areas. Anthrax can also be transmitted by consuming the meat of an infected animal. Avoidance of products made from animal origin such as souvenirs made from animal skins should be advised.
