Malaria in Venezuela

19 August 2016

The New York Times has reported a resurgence of malaria across Venezuela.

In 1961 Venezuela was the 1st nation in the world to be certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for eradicating malaria in its most populated areas. However, economic downturn has caused town dwelling Venezuelan’s to venture into the jungles to pan for black-market gold. People are contracting malaria via infected mosquito bites in the watery pits of the mines, and when they return home to recover they spread malaria parasites to the town dwelling mosquitoes.

Venezuela's Health Ministry has allegedly declined to comment.

Advice for Travellers

Clinicians should adhere to current guidance (SMAG and/or ACMP in UK) for malaria chemoprophylaxis for Venezuela. However, travellers should be made aware of the resurgence of malaria in Venezuela , and advised that mosquito bite avoidance should always be considered as the first line of defence against malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.
