Avian Influenza (Human H7N9) (Update)

The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China have notified WHO (World Health Organisation) of 5 new laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection, including 1 death.

Onset dates range from 24 June to 29 July 2016. Cases range in age from 13 to 79 years. Of these 5 cases, 3 are male. Only 2 of the 5 cases reported exposure to live poultry or where involved in slaughtering poultry. The remaining 3 cases did not report any history of exposure to poultry.

Cases were reported from two provinces (Fujian and Hebei) and one municipality (Beijing). Investigations are on-going, at this stage human-to human-transmission cannot be ruled out, however to date no further transmission has been reported.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers experiencing severe flu like symptoms within 10 days of returning from China, should contact their GP and inform them of their recent travel to China.
