A doctor from Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital has reported that a skulk of approximately 15 foxes attacked villagers in Garuda-2, Rautahat district of Nepal on the 3 and 4 October 2016. The foxes are reported to have bitten approximately 60 people, of these 17 suffered severe bite injuries and were referred to Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital for treatment with rabies immunoglobulin.
Whilst the doctor’s report indicates it was a skulk of foxes, the fact that the animals formed a large pack suggests they may have been jackals and not Bengal foxes, as the latter are less social.
Authorities have not captured or killed the animals, this means whilst it is suspected they are rabid it has not been confirmed.

Nepal is considered by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be a high risk destination for rabies. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
