Buruli Ulcer Disease in Sao Tome

On the 8 February 2017 ProMedMail reportedLink that 1094 cases of a disease manifesting in cutaneous ulcer have been registered in São Tomé since October 2016.

In response, health authorities in São Tomé have requested support from the World Health Organisation which has sent a specialist in Buruli ulcer to support.

Advice for Travellers

There is no vaccine against Buruli ulcer disease.

The risk to the vast majority of travellers is negligible. However, imported cases in returning travellers have been described.

Travellers to endemic regions who may be exposed to stagnant water bodies through professional/voluntary work should be advised of the risk of Buruli ulcer disease and protective measures discussed, i.e. wearing of protective clothing during water contact and ensuring all wounds are treated quickly and appropriately.
