GlaxoSmithKline Vaccine Supply

07 March 2017

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) have issued the following updates as regards vaccine supply:

Rabipur (Rabies vaccine, inactivated)

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency have approved the use of international packs of Rabipur vials in the UK.

GSK is expecting the next delivery of Rabipur in the UK towards the end of March, this will be in a new presentation of a pre-filled syringe and vial. The formulation and presentation of the international packs of Rabipur are identical to the current UK packs. However, the international pack has slightly different packaging compared to the UK and contains a PIL that is slightly different to the one supplied with UK packs. The PIL will be written in English.

Havrix Monodose (Hepatitis A (inactivated) vaccine (adsorbed))

GSK expect supply constraints for Havrix Monodose Singles between week commencing 2 March until week commencing 3 April 2017. This is due to increased demand for Havrix singles as a result of the out of stock Havrix 10 packs. GSK does not currently have a date for resupply of the 10 packs.

GSK customer support team can be contacted on 0808 100 9997.

Post-exposure (PEP) Rabies Treatment for Patients

In Scotland, GP’s can obtain vaccine through stock order but it is recognised that not all community pharmacies will hold rabies vaccine and there maybe a delay in obtaining it via this route. Since PEP should be instituted as soon as possible, if a delay is likely then patients should be referred to the local infectious disease physician for immediate management.

In England, requests should be referred to PHE Colindale (0208 327 6204).

In Wales, requests should be referred to the duty virologist, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff (029 20 747 747).
