South Africa has seen an increase in malaria cases since Easter 2017. On 12 May, the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NCID)
reported that an outbreak had been declared the Bushbuckridge area of Mpumalanga Province.
Malaria transmission also continues in Limpopo Province, mainly in Mopani and Vhembe Districts and also in adjacent areas of the northern Kruger National Park.
NCID reports that recent weather conditions have encouraged an increase in cases in 2016/2017 compared to 2015/2016. A similar increase has also been seen in neighbouring Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
