On 9 August the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported a new positive environmental sample of vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV). The sample was collected on 7 July 2017 in Lashkargah in Helmand Province.
The number of cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) remains at 5, with the most recent case having onset of paralysis on 19 June 2017.
Afghanistan is classified by the WHO as a polio infected country.
