According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) 15 cases of West Nile disease were reported in Greece between 2 August and 10 August 2017. This brings the Greek case total to 20 (including 2 deaths) since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season.
During the same period, Romania reported 1 case, in the south East of the country and Serbia reported 2 cases, the first cases of the year in these countries.
As of 10 August 2017, 1 case of West Nile disease has been reported in Italy.
WNV is present worldwide but the risk to travellers is low.
All travellers should be advised to practice Mosquito Bite Avoidance, especially from dusk till dawn during peak transmission times and when epidemics are known to be occurring.
No vaccine is available against WNV.
NOTE: UK Blood Transfusion Services accept donation from travellers returning from areas where there is a risk of West Nile Fever, provided the blood is tested negative for WNV.
