The malaria advice for Saudi Arabia has recently been updated. This is following consideration by the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) after an extensive review of the available data.
The risk of malaria has reduced considerably in recent years with few areas reporting cases. The risk of malaria for travellers to all areas is now considered to be ‘low to no risk’. Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is no longer advised for any traveller, including Hajj pilgrims. Malaria precautions and prevention of mosquito bites are strongly advised. Any traveller who develops a fever should seek medical attention urgently.
This is especially important for anyone who is outdoors in the evening and at night such as Hajj pilgrims.
