Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in Pakistan (Update 1)

03 October 2018

Media reports indicate Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) continues to be transmitted in Pakistan. A teenage boy died of CCHF in Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on 28 September 2018. In Karachi (Sind) a man died of CCHF on 30 September 2018. He was the eleventh person to die of the disease in the city this year.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is found in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe/the Balkans and the Middle East. It is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from an animal reservoir such as cattle, sheep and goats. CCHF can also be transmitted by contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected animal or person. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
