Myanmar - International Measures to stop the spread of wild poliovirus Update

17 October 2018

It is more than three years since circulation of wild-type polio ceased in Myanmar (last case 08 October 2015).

TRAVAX methodology requires that polio vaccine is recommended for travellers for a total of three years following the last case report, polio vaccine is therefore no longer recommended for travellers to Myanmar.

Advice for Travellers

Polio is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route. Particularly in areas where sanitation is poor. Travellers should take strict precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.

Further information can be found on the Poliomyelitis page.
