UK Traveller Acquires Rabies in Morocco

12 November 2018

Public Health England report that a UK resident has sadly died after acquiring rabies following a cat bite during a trip to Morocco.

Travellers are advised to avoid all unecessary contact with animals while abroad particularly in those countries where rabies exists. Where an animal bite is sustained in a country where rabies exists, prompt first aid of the bite should be followed by urgent assessment by a healthcare practitioner. Where post exposure rabies vaccination is needed this should be commenced as soon as possible.

Travellers going to remote areas in countries where rabies exists, or going to areas where medical facilities may not be accessible, may choose to have rabies vaccination prior to travel. See individual country records for advice.
