Foreign and Commonwealth Revised Advice for Volunteers

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have recently revised and updated their advice for gap travellers, volunteers and adventure travellers.

Key points include:

  • plan ahead
  • stay up to date
  • for volunteers: check the background and legitimacy of the volunteer organisation you are joining; consider the impact and ethics of the work you will be involved in especially where it involves working with children and in particular within orphanages
  • for adventure travellers: look into safety standards; find out what emergency and contingency plans there are
  • look into insurance details
  • stay safe
  • stay in touch.
