Anaphylaxis guidance update

The Resuscitation Council UK have released their new resuscitation guidelines, which includes the 2021 Emergency treatment of anaphylaxis: Guidelines for healthcare providers

  • All healthcare professionals administering travel vaccines should familiarise themselves with the new guidance.

The key changes in the 2021 version of the anaphylaxis guidelines are:

  • increased emphasis on the use of intramuscular adrenaline and on the importance of avoiding sudden changes in posture during treatment
  • specific dose of adrenaline for children below 6 months of age
  • new algorithms provided for: 1. Initial treatment of anaphylaxis and 2. treatment of refractory anaphylaxis
  • information on the appropriate use of intravenous fluids and antihistamines
  • guidance to the duration of observation following anaphylaxis
