World Hepatitis Day 2022

26 July 2022

World Hepatitis Day takes place on 28 July each year to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence change.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, mostly caused by a viral infection. Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E are the five main types of hepatitis viruses. These five types cause the greatest burden of illness and death and have the greatest potential for outbreaks and epidemic spread.

  • More than 350 million people live with viral hepatitis
  • Every 30 seconds, a person dies from a hepatitis-related illness
  • Every hepatitis-related death is preventable thanks to existing prevention, testing and treatment services
  • 9 out of 10 people living with hepatitis are unaware of their diagnosis

The theme for the 2022 global campaign is 'I can’t wait' which aims to:

  • highlight the social unfairness caused by the current lack of global action to eliminate hepatitis
  • speed up the fight against hepatitis to meet hepatitis elimination goals by 2030
  • provide equal access to testing and treatment for those that need it
  • end the stigma, discrimination and amplify the voices of people affected by hepatitis
