Media quoting public health authorities in Italy have reported cases of locally-transmitted dengue in Rome and Lombardy since the start of August 2023. None of the cases have reported foreign travel.
In Rome, a case was identified on 11 August 2023, after becoming unwell on 2 August. It is thought that he became infected in either the 9th District of Rome, or in the 14th District, possibly in the parks of Pineto, Valle Aurelia or Monte Ciocci.
In Lombardy, two confirmed cases have been reported in Castiglione d'Adda (Lodi) and Maderno del Garda (Brescia) in recent days. Also in Lombardy, mosquito control activities are underway after two suspected dengue cases were reported in Padegne sul Garda (Brescia) and Monza.
Dengue is an infection found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.
All travellers to endemic regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.
Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.
A new dengue vaccine Qdenga® has been licensed in the UK and is awaiting JCVI recommendations for use.
Travellers developing a fever during or on return from travel are advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
