Dengue in France (Update 8)

French public health authorities have reported a total of 76 cases of dengue in southern France from 17 June 2024 to 2 October 2024. The affected areas are:

Alpes-Maritimes: 12 cases in Vallauris, 2 cases in La Colle sur Loup and 1 case who was infected in Menton or Monaco.

Drôme: 2 cases in Montelimar.

Herault: 1 case who was infected in Montpellier or Perols and 1 case in Vendargues.

Lozere: 2 cases in Florac, although they may have been infected in Baho, Pyrenees-Orientales.

Var: 25 cases in La Crau and 12 cases in Frejus.

Vaucluse: 18 cases in Sainte-Cecile-les-Vignes.

Dengue is an infection mostly found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, but it does occur in southern Europe. It is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to affected regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.

Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

• Prevention relies on avoiding mosquito bites at all times.

A new dengue vaccine Qdenga® has been licensed in the UK.

• Guidance on the recommended use of Qdenga® vaccine is currently being drafted for the Green Book, but is not yet available.
