WHO certifies Egypt as malaria-free

21 October 2024

The World Health Organization (WHO) certified Egypt as malaria-free on 20 October 2024.

Egypt is the third country in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region to be certified as free of malaria.

Malaria elimination certification is granted by WHO when a country has:

  • shown that malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes has been interrupted nationwide for at least three consecutive years
  • demonstrated the capacity to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission

Malaria prevention measures are not required for travellers to Egypt, although insect bites should be avoided as other vector-borne infections may be present.

See the Malaria section for further information on the disease.
