Costa Rica: Changes to country yellow fever certificate requirements

24 December 2024

The Costa Rican Ministry of Health have recently published (in Spanish) changes to their yellow fever certificate (ICVP) requirements for travellers, which will become effective on 11 January 2025.

The publication:

  • provides an update to the list of countries that will be considered 'at risk' of yellow fever, which includes Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago in the Americas, and some countries in Africa (these are not specified in the publication)
  • advises that proof of vaccination against yellow fever is a requirement for entry into Costa Rica if arriving from an ‘at risk’ country
  • cautions that anyone arriving in Costa Rica from a country considered 'at risk' without a yellow fever ICVP will not be able to enter Costa Rica

This information supersedes the advice provided by Costa Rica in the most recent World Health Organization publication 'Vaccination requirements and recommendations for international travellers' and should be followed.

Yellow Fever Certificate Requirements

The World Health Organization (WHO) consult with individual countries State Parties annually to confirm or update their country's yellow fever certificate requirements for international travellers. This is also known as the countries International Certificate of Vaccine or Prophylaxis (ICVP) requirement.

Information is published every two years by the WHO and details can be found on our Country pages. Updates from the World Health Organization for all countries are anticipated in the coming months.
