Raising awareness about the risk of measles

28 March 2025

With cases of measles still being seen in Scotland and outbreaks occurring globally, NHS Scotland are continuing to raise awareness of measles and the importance of being protected through vaccination. For latest information on global outbreaks, see:

Within a travel context, Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) are well placed to identify travellers at higher risk of measles infection and those that may require MMR vaccine. Specific groups at risk include:

  • anyone who has not been fully immunised*
  • those who will be living and/or working with local populations
  • visiting friends and relative (VFR) travellers
  • those attending mass gathering events and /or summer festivals.

* For children that have not yet received 2 doses of MMR vaccine and travelling to endemic areas, or to an area where there is a current measles outbreak, MMR vaccine can be given earlier than usual. HCPs can access information in relation to this on the TRAVAX Measles/Mumps/Rubella page and in The Green Book: Measles Chapter.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers should be up to date with MMR vaccine as per the UK vaccination schedule, ensuring that they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, and are advised to follow strict respiratory hygiene and hand hygiene measures during travel.

Travellers can be signposted to more information on measles, including how they can check their vaccination status and how to get their MMR vaccine if they live in:

In addition, travellers can be sent the information on fitfortravel Measles/Mumps/Rubella page using the suitcase function on TRAVAX.

After Travel

Travellers returning from abroad and who feel unwell on their return should be advised to seek medical advice. Where possible, they should be advised to phone ahead first before visiting healthcare facilities in person, in case they may be infectious, and advised to notify the HCP if they have attended a mass gathering abroad.
