Cholera in Congo (Democratic Republic)

18 July 2011

More than 3000 cases of cholera have been reported since an outbreak began in the north-eastern city of Kisangani in March 2011. The disease has since spread to the provinces of Equateur, Bandundu, and the capital, Kinshasa. The UN Office for the Coordination of the Humanitarian Affairs reports that Bandundu is the worst affected province with 1271 cases and 72 deaths as of 4 Jul 2011.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. Care must also be taken with food, water and personal hygiene.
