West Nile Virus in Romania

Romania's Health Ministry has confirmed this year's (2011) 1st case of infection with the mosquito-borne West Nile virus. The case was confirmed in the eastern Galati County (in eastern Romania). Last year (2010), 4 people died in Romania from West Nile virus and 38 others were infected.

Advice for Travellers

West Nile virus is spread by mosquito bites. It has become more widely recognised in recent years. Travellers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites by protecting the skin with clothing and insect repellent, especially during summer months.
