Cholera in Burundi

The Burundi Red Cross reports a cholera epidemic in some communes of Bujumbura Mayorship, Bujumbura Rural, Bururi, Bubanza and Cibitoke provinces. As of 24 August 2011, 245 cases, including 7 deaths, have been recorded. Rumonge commune in Bururi province is the worst affected, with a total of 73 cholera cases.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population, and cannot ensure safe drinking water, can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should be maintained whilst in Burundi.
