Dengue Fever in Brazil (Update 2)

Dengue feverĀ in Fortaleza increased by over 1000 percent this year (2011) in relation to last year (2010) according to statistics of the municipal Secretariat of Health. According to a bulletin published on 16 Sep 2011, there were 28 240 cases in the capital. In all of Ceara state, there were 47 763 cases registerd in 175 municipalities, 59 per cent of these totals were in Fortaleza.

A report issued on 14 Sep 2011, by the state Secretariat of Health, from 2 Jan - 10 Sep this year (2011), there were 156 541 cases of the disease reported with 130 deaths. Rio de Janeiro is the municipality with the most deaths, 50, and more than 46 000 reported cases.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
