Poliomyelitis in Pakistan (Update 4)

20 October 2011

Eleven new polio cases were reported in the past week from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh, making a total of 111 cases in 2011. Three environmental samples were confirmed as positive for poliovirus from Punjab and Sindh, indicating that Pakistan is affected by widespread, nationwide transmission of poliovirus.

The next National Immunisation Day is planned for 24-26 October.
