As of 20 October 2011, 89 confirmed human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU, 13 of those cases have been recorded in Italy. Since the last report, Italy has recorded 2 new confirmed cases of neuroinvasive infection, one from a new province, Olbia and the other from a province with previous case reports, Oristano. The worst affected province is Treviso with 6 cases.

Advice for Travellers
West Nile virus is spread by mosquito bites. It has become more widely recognised in Europe in recent years. Travellers should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites especially during summer months.
