Poliomyelitis in Afghanistan (Update)

Six new poliomyelitis cases were reported in the past week in Afghanistan; the total number of cases for 2011 is now 53. Three of the cases reported this week are in districts which had not previously reported a case this year; Barmal district in Paktika province, Shahidi Hassas district in Uruzgan province and Daychopan in Zabul province. The case reported in Paktika is the first case in the province for 2011.

Preparations are ongoing for two Short Interval Additional Dose (SIAD) rounds to be held on 27-29 November and 4-6 December 2011.

Advice for Travellers

It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected and take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
