Hepatitis A in Russian Federation

An outbreak of hepatitis A has been reported in the city of Novosibirsk (3rd largest in Russia) in the south of central Russia. To date, 56 cases have been registered in the city and a further 2000 contacts of cases have been identified by the health authorities. All identified contacts who were susceptible to hepatitis A infection have been immunised in an attempt to contain the outbreak.

An epidemiological investigation into the outbreak is underway; at present the source of infection has not been identified. The first cases had eaten at one restaurant in one of the business centres of the city.

Advice for Travellers

Hepatitis A vaccination is usually recommended for travellers to the Russian Federation as the prevalence is considered moderate. Care should also be taken with food, water and personal hygiene whilst in the country.
