The WHO was notified of three cases of yellow fever by the Ministry of Health for Senegal on 26 October 2011. The cases were identified in Kedougou and Saraya Health districts, near the border with Mali and Guinea. The index case, a 25 year-old woman from Kedougou was detected as part of a surveillance project for dengue fever and chikungunya in the region. Yellow fever was laboratory confirmed on 10 Ocober 2011.
The other two cases, a 29 year-old woman and a 3 year-old boy were reported on the 10 and 11 August 2011. All have recovered. This area of Senegal had a mass vaccination campaign in 2007, against yellow fever and coverage in both Health districts reached almost 95.0%. Further vaccination will take place in December 2011, targeting unvaccinated individuals aged nine months and over with the exception of pregnant women.
