Measles in Uganda

09 December 2011

The Ministry of Health on 5 Dec 2011, reported a national measles outbreak in eastern, central, and western Uganda. Measles cases have been identified in Bududa, Bukedea, Bushenyi Kabarole, Kampala, Rakai, Ntungamo, Luweero, Namayingo, Nakasongola, and Namutumba districts.

The infection was first suspected in Namayingo in November 2011, where a total of 112 children developed symptoms of measles. Reported cases of measles in Uganda have declined by over 90%, due in part to the initiation of nationwide vaccination campaigns in 2003, however measles causes more deaths in children than any other vaccine-preventable disease.

In Bushenyi district, 4 cases of rubella have been identified since an outbreak began two weeks ago. Rubella has been laboratory confirmed.

It is not clear from this report whether the nationwide outbreak is measles, rubella or both. Further clarification is awaited.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
