An Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) press release on 7 December 2011, reported on an ongoing cholera outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Since the epidemic began in four provinces along the Congo River, a total of 7 722 cases with 426 deaths have been recorded.
Equateur province with 3 040 cases and 140 deaths is the worst affected area followed by Bandundu province with 2 301 cases and 138 deaths, Eastern Province with 1 631 cases and 84 deaths and Kinshasa with 750 cases with 39 deaths.
According to the press release, various non governmental organisations (NGO) are supporting DRC Government, to care for cases in different cholera treatment centres and control the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
