Rabies (Human) in South Africa

15 December 2011

Two humans deaths from rabies virus infecion have been reported from South Africa. The first, a 7-year-old boy from Eastern Cape Province who was bitten by a dog, the second, a 9-year-old boy from KwaZulu-Natal Province who was also bitten by a dog. The first case had not sought treatment for the bite; the second did receive post-exposure prophylaxis, however this proved unsuccessful in preventing spread of the virus.

To date in 2011, six human cases of rabies virus infection have been laboratory confirmed in South Africa; Limpopo (3), KwaZulu-Natal (2) and Eastern Cape (1) Provinces.
