Malaria in United Arab Emirates

19 December 2011

Several cases of malaria have been reported in International City in Dubai. A local general practitioner said dozens of residents could be infected by mosquitoes thriving in dirty water bodies in the residential cluster. The area reporting cases has a high population of migrant workers and malaria has been imported by workers returning from endemic areas in the past.

Advice for Travellers

Malaria is not normally present in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is always good practice however to avoid mosquito bites in countries where they are present. Malaria prophylaxis is not recommended for UAE.
