Measles in Ecuador

The Health Ministry has reported an outbreak of measles that began in July 2011. To date,169 cases have been confirmed, 131 of which are in the Andean province of Tungurahua, predominantly among the indigenous population.

Measles cases are also being reported from other provinces: Pichincha (14 cases), Guayas (10 cases) (south-west of the country), Cotopaxi (8 cases), Chimborazo (3 cases) (both in southern Ecuador), Pastaza (3 Cases) (southeast, near the Peruvian border).

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
