The Department of Health Services in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) has reported on an outbreak of dengue fever. Since the outbreak in September last year (2011), FSM has recorded 1078 cases; the highest in the State of Yap with 839 cases. There were 77 cases in Ulithi Atoll, 158 on Fais Island, 2 in Eauripik Island and 2 in Woleai Atoll. Of that total, 170 cases had been admitted to the state hospital with 2 deaths from dengue type 2 virus.

Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
