The Health Department has reported a human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1); this is the first case in Vietnam to be reported since April 2010.
The case is a duck farmer from the southern Mekong delta province of Hau Giang. Experts are investigating the source of infection which may have been his flock. The man died as a result of the infection on 11 January 2012. Confirmation by WHO is awaited.
